LUCKNOW: A gangster and his aide were lynched by villagers when they allegedly barged into the house of the village pradhan and demanded ₹ 2 lakh as extortion money, in Sultanpur on Sunday morning, police said.

Another accomplice of the history-sheeter was critically injured in the attack by the villagers and is undergoing treatment in King George Medical University’s trauma centre here. The incident led to tension in the village after which a heavy police force was deployed .

Sultanpur superintendent of police Anurag Vats said the two deceased were history-sheeter Sharda Pratap Singh alias Raja Babu and his aide Dhananjai Yadav. The injured miscreant was identified as Mohit Mishra.

Vats said Raja Babu is a history-sheeter with over a dozen criminal cases against him, adding that Babu’s brother Jitendra Singh alias Munna Singh is also a history sheeter with over 20 criminal cases against him. He was sent to jail only a week ago, he said. Vats said initial findings suggest that Raja Babu and his accomplices had demanded ₹ 2 lakh as extortion money from JP Nishad, the pradhan of Kabri Semraghat village a few days ago.

“On Sunday morning Babu, along with five accomplices, reached the village, barged into the pradhan’s house and attacked his mother following which she lost consciousness. Soon villagers, who thought the woman had died in the attack, surrounded the history-sheeter’s vehicle. While three of the miscreants managed to escape, the villagers mercilessly beat up the other three with rods and lathis,” the SP said. Vats said Babu and Dhananjai succumbed to their injuries while the third badly injured miscreant was taken to the trauma centre in Lucknow.

The SP added that an FIR of murder has been lodged against unidentified persons.
