DHANBAD: The Bokaro police have lodged an FIR against a medical officer and one of his relatives for allegedly keeping a brother and sister duo, both in their 50s, in captivity for years to usurp their property, said the police on Sunday.

Police rescued Manjusri Ghosh, 56, and her brother Deepak Ghosh, 50, from a locked room in Cooperative Colony, Bokaro, on Wednesday.

Police found Deepak lying on a bed with his hands tied, while Manjusri was locked in another room. The FIR was lodged against Dr DK Gupta and his relative on Saturday after the intervention of additional director general of police Anil Palta, sources said.

The siblings, allegedly suffering from mental illness, were admitted in Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) in poor health .

Bokaro city police station in-charge MN Sinha said, “FIR has been lodged against the accused, but both of them are absconding.”

Police said Gupta was posted on deputation at Chas sub-divisional hospital for the last four years.

Gupta and his relative Mantosh took a portion of building on rent from AK Ghosh, the father of the siblings, in 2002. Gupta opened an eye clinic while Mantosh an optical shop.

AK Ghosh died in 2012 and after two years his wife died. Since then, Gupta and Mantosh were reportedly taking care of the siblings, police said.

However, local people told police that Gupta and his relative captured the entire building and kept the duo captive.

Sources said that Manjusri Ghosh was a year senior to ADGP Palta in St. Xavier’s School, Bokaro.

When he came to know about the incident during a function of Old Xaverian Association on Saturday, he directed the police to lodge an FIR in the case, sources said.

Palta met the siblings in hospital on Saturday.

BGH doctors said the siblings are malnourished. “Since they were confined in a room for a long time, their condition has become critical,” said Dr SK Sinha.

He said Manjusri’s mental condition was critical, while Deepak’s one leg was found fractured.
