LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday de-recognized the controversial Maharajganj madarsa and suspended all further financial assistance to it for preventing students from singing the national anthem on Independence Day.

“The action has been taken on the findings of an inquiry conducted by the district minority officer against Madarsa Arabia Ahle Sunnat Anware Tayyaba Girls’ College in Malangdih in Maharajganj district,” said SN Pandey, registrar, Madarsa Education Board, who issued the order.

He said all financial assistance to the institution under the madarsa modernization scheme of the state government was also being stopped.

The principal of madarsa Maulana Fazlur Rehman and a local resident Junaid Ansari were arrested by the police and a case of treason was registered against them by the police after a video showed them trying to prevent madrasa students from singing the national anthem during flag-hoisting ceremony on Independence Day.

The police had registered the case on a complaint of one Sunil Tripathi, who teaches science under Madarsa Modernisation Scheme and two other teachers, who had objected to the move.

Subsequently, district magistrate Amarnath Upadhyay had ordered district minority officer Prabhat Kumar to investigate the matter.

“No member or office-bearer of the madarsa’s management committee was present during the flag-hoisting ceremony. While this shows their lack of interest in the affairs of the madarsa, the institution also lacks the sufficient number of students and teachers as required under the law,” said Pandey in the cancellation order.
