LUCKNOW: The Resident Doctors’ Association has given an ultimatum to the King George’s Medical University administration that the residents would go on strike if their demand for wage revision was not addressed by Tuesday morning.

“We have been demanding this for the past two years. A month ago, we gave a memorandum and another a week before. Now we have asked for a meeting on Tuesday morning and if things are not sorted out, we may go on strike, barring emergency services,” said Dr Neeraj Mishra, general secretary of the association.

“We, the resident doctors of KGMU, have been demanding pay status equal to resident doctors of SGPGI. We met former CM Akhilesh Yadav, current CM Yogi Adityanath and then medical education minister Ashutosh Tandon on April 2. We were assured our demands would be accepted but August is ending and nothing has happened. Now it’s pretty sure that the government is deaf to our demands”, said the letter to the KGMU vice chancellor.

If resident doctors go on strike, the OPD, ward services and even diagnostic services will be adversely affected on the campus. The doctors are likely to assemble before the VC office at 8 am, hence services might be disrupted since then.

KGMU authorities said talks were on with the government on the issue. “We appeal to the resident doctors to have patience till a decision comes from the government and avoid any action that hampers services,” said Prof SN Sankhwar, spokesperson, KGMU.

The resident doctors have decided to not disturb the emergency services and decision on assisting selective operations in different department will also be taken after the meeting with the KGMU officials.
