Govt draws Oppn fire over law, order situation
Oppn protested government’s claim that the law and order situation was a thousand times better than previous regimes
LUCKNOW: The Yogi Adityanath government drew flak from the Opposition in the state assembly on Tuesday over the allegedly ‘poor law and order situation’ in Uttar Pradesh.
Amid the government’s claim that the law and order situation was a thousand times better than the condition during the previous regimes, the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress members staged a walkout to protest against the ‘rising’ crime graph.
Speaking on an adjournment motion, Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary (Samajwadi Party) said incidents of crime against women had gone up during the tenure of the BJP government. Chaudhary also quoted the incident of loot of a cash van near Raj Bhawan to make his point about the ‘poor’ law and order situation. He demanded a two-hour debate on the issue.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Lalji Verma said though the BJP had come to power by promising to control ‘goondaraj’ and corruption, it had failed to do so. Verma said the state that was in the 34th position during the BSP regime had reached the 22nd position on the list of states with high crime. Congress Legislature Party leader Ajay Kumar Lallu said there was jungle rule in the state. Lallu cited crime in Gorakhpur and Deoria shelter home incident to make his point and press for a debate.
As Chaudhary, Verma and Lallu quoted data to support their point about rising crime, minister for parliamentary affairs Suresh Khanna countered them by providing official figures about crime under various heads. Khanna questioned the statistics provided by the leaders of opposition parties and said they had spoken an untruth in the house. Khanna said barring the dowry related incidents, the crime graph had shown a downward trend in the state. He said there was only a marginal increase in overall crime.
Referring to the Deoria shelter home incident, he said the BJP government had cancelled the recognition to the NGO involved in the matter.
Khanna also said the NGO had applied for registration in 2009 and it was given recognition in 2012 when the BJP was not in power.He said action was taken against 10 SHOs and those responsible had been arrested soon after the issue was brought to notice of the chief minister.
