LUCKNOW: IPS officer Surendra Das, who was battling for life for the last four days after consuming a poisonous substance, died at Kanpur’s Regency hospital on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Das, 30, was a 2014 batch officer and posted as superintendent of police, Kanpur (east).

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath and UP director general of police (DGP) OP Singh expressed grief over the officer’s death.

The DGP, who visited Das’s family, said he was extremely saddened by the untimely death of Das, who was a young and hard working officer. “I pray for peace to the departed soul and extend my condolence to the bereaved family,” he said.

Das’ family members, meanwhile, have decided to register a police case against his wife and in-laws for abetment of suicide. “We will register an FIR against my brother’s wife Dr Raveena and in-laws as they are responsible for him taking the extreme stem,” said Narendra Das, the IPS officer’s elder brother.

The DGP had earlier visited Kanpur on Saturday to enquire about Das’s condition.

According to doctors, Das was continuously on life support and his condition was critical ever since he was brought to the hospital.

Doctors suspect Das had consumed Celphos, a pesticide, which affected his entire body.

They said Das underwent multiple operations but his condition worsened on Saturday when blood circulation in some parts of his body stopped.

He breathed his last at 12.19 pm on Sunday.

While searching the room in the presence of the officer’s mother Indu Devi and brother Narendra Das, the forensic team had found a torn suicide note on Wednesday.

ADG, Kanpur zone, Avinash Chandra said the officer had not blamed anyone in the suicide note.

“He has mentioned several issues that indicate towards discord in his personal life. We will investigate the matter. We are looking as to who tampered with the two-page suicide note,” he said.

Das had joined as the SP (east) last month replacing Anurag Arya who was shifted to Amethi as superintendent of police.

Das’s wife Raveena Singh, who is a doctor, found froth oozing out from her husband’s mouth when she woke up at about 5 am on Wednesday (September 5) and rushed him to UHM hospital.

Later, he was shifted to a private hospital from where he was referred to Regency hospital.

Das, a BTech in electrical engineering, hails from Ballia but his family – including mother Indu Devi and elder brother Narendra Das – stays in Ekta Nagar locality behind SGPGI in Lucknow.

The family members were in Kanpur since Wednesday.

LUCKNOW: Upset over 2014 batch IPS officer Surendra Das’s death, his brother has decided to register a police complaint against his wife and in-laws for abetment of suicide.

Surendra’s elder brother Narendra Das said he would register an FIR against his sister-in-law Dr Raveena and her parents as they were responsible for his brother’s extreme step.

He was speaking to media persons at his residence in Ekta Na gar colony behind S GP GI campus after the IPS officer’ s body was brought here for his last rites. The cremation will take place at Baikunth Dham on Monday.

He said his brother had told him that things were not good between him and his wife and he was thinking of divorce only two months after his marriage on April 9, 2017. He said Surendra’s wife did not stay even for 24 hours at his residence and left the house after staying for a few hours. Even on the day of reception on April 11, 2017, she arrived at the venue from her house, he added.

Narendra said his brother’s wife stopped him from talking to his family members and he had last interacted with his brother around two months back. He said his brother had told him then that his wife had regular spats with him over trivial issue.

He said his brother wanted to live with his family but his wife did not allow him to do so and he was under acute pressure. But he said he did not know this pressure would drive Surendra to suicide.

Narendra said the entire family had struggled a lot along with his brother Surendra, after the death of their father RC Das, an ex-army man, in 2008. He said Surendra was the youngest among six siblings, including two brothers and five sisters. He said had Surendra not married Dr Raveena, he would have been alive today .

After Surendra’s body was brought to his Lucknow residence late on Sunday evening, several senior police officers and his batch mates visited his house to pay last tributes. His wife and in-laws also came but left only after around 15 minutes.
