Yoga, meditation to be regular for cops

LUCKNOW: In the wake of two senior police officers’ suicides in the past three months, UP Police has decided to promote yoga and meditation among cops to help them cope with stress .

To note , 2014 batch IPS officer Surendra Das ,30, who was posted as SP East in Kanpur, died on Sunday, four days after consuming poison at his official residence in Kanpur last Wednesday. Earlier, 1992 batch UP Provincial Police Service (PPS) officer Rajesh Sahni ,48, who was posted as ASP operations with the UP ATS, had shot himself dead in his office room in Gomtinagar here on May 29.

Director general of police (DGP) OP Singh said stress was common in police and paramilita­ry forces across the country due to their round the clock working hours. He said the two suicides by senior police officers may be the fall out of a personal reason but the work hour’s stress might have added to it.

He said the state police were already promoting soft skill developmen­t, yoga and meditation to help officers as well as lower rung police personnel cope with stress . These things would be promoted further and every police personnel would be persuaded to make yoga and meditation a regular feature of life .

Other then two senior police officers, a 55-year-old head constable promote (HCP) Ram Ratan Verma of UP-100, police emergency response centre, had also ended his life by shooting himself with a gun at his Alambagh residence in Lucknow on June 9.
