‘Rapists should be hanged in public’
VARANASI: Vice-president of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission Anju Chaudhary has demanded stringent punishment for rapists.
Talking to journalists at the Circuit House on Sunday, she said, “Police are for protection of the people. The incident of alleged harassment of a woman police constable by some fellow constable is very painful. A team of the women’s commission would carry out inspection at the police station. I will look into the matter and a probe will be carried out into the same constable’s suicide in order that those harassed her may get strict punishment.”
A body of the woman constable was found hanging at her official residence in a police station in Banda district on September 5 following her harassment allegedly by her colleague.
“I think there should be three punishments in the cases of rape. One: they (rapists) should be either hanged in the open or they should be awarded life imprisonment or ‘Unko aisa dand diya jaay ki aise log fir purush hi na rahe’ (they should be given such a punishment that they lose their manhood),” she said.
She further said the women’s commission was making serious efforts for the protection of girls and women.
Chaudhary also advised the girls learn the techniques of self defence. She said inspections were being carried out at shelter homes across the state.
