SP leader accuses inlaws of setting her on fire
VARANASI : Senior SP leader Sangeeta Yadav was set afire allegedly by her in-laws in their house in Bithuva Kala village in Jaunpur during the wee hours of Monday, police said. They said though no formal complaint was lodged immediately, Sangeeta’s father-in-law Jaynath Yadav had been detained by the police.
VARANASI: Senior Samajwadi Party leader and former vicechairperson of Lalit Kala Akademi Sangeeta Yadav was set afire allegedly by her in-laws in their house in Bithuva Kala village in Jaunpur during the wee hours of Monday, police said.
Inspector at Badlapur police station Sunil Dutt said though no formal complaint was lodged immediately, Sangeeta’s fatherin-law Jaynath Yadav had been detained by the police. “Sangeeta’s husband Durgesh Yadav is absconding.We are waiting for the victim’s family to lodge a complaint ,” he said.
Sangeeta is undergoing treatment at Jaunpur district hospital where her condition is said to be stable. According to doctors, she sustained 40 per cent burns.
Sangeeta is a folk singer of ‘Birha’ genre popular in east UP and Bihar. She served as vicechairperson of Lalit Kala Akademi in the Akhilesh Yadav government, enjoying the status of a minister of state. A police officer familiar with the developments said Sangeeta Yadav of Katahit village in Jaunpur was married to Durgesh of Bithuva Kala village in the same district in 2016.
“Sangeeta, who lives in Lucknow with her husband, informed that she reached her in-laws’ place three-day ago after being called by her mother-inlaw,” the officer said. Later, talking to reporters at district hospital, Sangeeta alleged that her mother-in-law called her to her room on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
“As I entered the room, my mother-in-law poured kerosene on me after which my father-inlaw Jaynath Yadav set me on fire. I ran towards the bathroom to save myself. The wife of my elder brother-in-law extinguished the fire ,” she said.
