LUCKNOW : Students created a ruckus on Tuesday after a worm was again found in the lunch served to them in the central mess at the University of Lucknow. They alleged that substandard food was being given to them for the last several months, said police.

After the students’ protest, the university administration called the police to prevent any vandalism on the campus. The students claimed that the university administration took no action against the mess owner.

Amber Singh, inspector, Hasanganj, said a number of students gathered at the central mess protested against the mess owner and accused university officials of not taking action against him.

“The police dispersed the crowd and prevented any vandalism,” said Singh.

LU spokesperson NK Pandey said he spoke to the chief provost and discussed the issue. “We are taking all precautionary measures to ensure that such things are not repeated.” When reminded about hostellers not receiving their caution money deposited at the central mess, Pandey said he was not aware about it and if this was true it would be refunded soon.

On Monday also, students had found a worm in the lunch served to them at Lucknow University’s (LU) central mess, said

an inmate of a hostel on the campus.

“This is not happening for the first time,” said hostellers.

On September 11, inmates of Tilak Hostel for women students had found a worm in their meal. Some students said the quality of food at the university was deteriorating despite repeated complaints.

“Last month also, worms

were found in meals served at the university’s central mess,” they alleged.

A hosteller said some time ago he was served chapati with hair on it. “We took up the matter with the mess owner, but the issue was ignored,” said the student, who regularly has his meal in the mess.

Soon after the September 11 incident at Tilak hostel, a meeting

of LU hostel coordination committee was held to discuss students’ problems. The problems included quality of food in the central mess, maintenance of hostels, water supply and seepage in walls.
