State gears up to check outbreak of vector-borne diseases
LUCKNOW: UP health department has prepared a plan to check the spread of communicable and vector-borne diseases in the state, officials said.
Heavy rainfall, accompanied by flood, and poor sanitation conditions, led to the outbreak of diseases like Japanese encephalitis (JE), acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), diarrhoea, measles, chickenpox, dengue and chikungunya in Terai belt and east UP districts.
“The chief medical officers (CMOs) of all the districts have been asked to ensure spraying of insecticides to check the outbreak of the mosquito-borne diseases,” said director-general, medical health, Dr Padmakar Singh.
A government spokesman said 91 teams of doctors and para-medical staff had been deputed in Bareilly, 53 teams in Badaun and 14 in Sitapur.
“In view of the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, health officials in districts have been put on alert. Active surveillance is being carried out in rural and urban areas. Health officials at district level have been directed to carry out death audit of patients falling prey to communicable diseases,” he said.
According to health department records, at least 2,023 cases of AES have been reported of which 112 patients died while Japanese encephalitis (JE) infected 163 people of whom 6 died.
At least 262 people were infected by chickenpox, 2,039 by measles, 970 by diarrhoea, 522 by dengue, 65 by kalazar and 47 by chikungunya.

Deoria, Maharajganj, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gonda, Balrampur, Azamgarh, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ambedkar Nagar and Sultanpur.
The districts of Terai region including Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur are in the grip of mosquito-borne diseases. In a report to the health department, additional director (health), Bareilly division, Dr Pramila Gaur said at least 64,331 patients were admitted to government hospitals in Bareilly and 9,272 patients were in the grip of malaria.
Of these, 3,389 cases of malaria have reported from Bareilly district alone.
According to the report, 24 deaths occurred due to fever while 21 were caused by other reasons (cancer, renal failure, cirrhosis and accident).
In Badaun, 30,361 people were in the grip of fever and 2,361 were infected by malaria. While 23 people died of fever, 115 deaths were due to other reasons.
In Pilibhit, 10,310 people were affected by fever and 47 suffered from malaria. Twenty-three deaths have been reported in the district due to fever and other reasons. In Shahjhanpur, 12,834 people suffered from fever while 22 patients died. Cases of malaria were also reported from Hardoi and Bahraich.
