HC seeks probe status report on memorial scam

LUCKNOW : The Allahabad high court on Thursday directed the state government to apprise the court of the status of vigilance inquiry into the memorial scam, which had taken place during 2007 to 2012. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati was the chief minister of the state during the period.

The then state government had constructe­d memorials, statues and parks at a cost of ₹2600 crore at NOIDA and Lucknow. .

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by Shashi Kant alias Bhavesh Pandey, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale and justice Yashwant Varma directed to list this case on September 27 for the next hearing.

An FIR was lodged against several persons in the year 2014,

including chief minister Mayawati, her cabinet colleagues Nasmeeduni­n Siddiqui and Babu Singh Kushwaha and around 12 MLAs of that period.

Apart from this, more than 100 engineers and other officers had been made accused in the matter.

During the pendency of matter before the Lokayukta, a memorial scam worth more than ₹1400 crore had come to limelight.

Engineers and officers belonging to Nirman Nigam, Public Works Department and New Okhla Industrial Developmen­t Authority (NOIDA) had been made accused in the said FIR.
