First triple talaq case lodged in UP
LUCKNOW : A man allegedly gave triple talaq to his wife and solemnised his second marriage at a police station in Bijnor district, prompting the family of his first wife to lodge a case of instant divorce against him on Tuesday. This is the first case of triple talaq in Uttar Pradesh after the union cabinet made it a punishable offence through an ordinance on September 19.
LUCKNOW : A case of domestic violence and dowry harassment registered at Women’s Police Station in Hazratganj area of Lucknow will now be lodged under section 3/4 of the Woman (Protection of Marriage Ordinance, 2018).
Earlier on Saturday, Meera (she goes by her first name), 32, of Saadatganj area had lodged an FIR against her husband Moharram Ali claiming that her husband assaulted her and gave her instant divorce on Friday.
The city police had registered an FIR under IPC sections dealing with dowry harassment, domestic violence, voluntarily causing hurt and causing miscarriage but did not lodge a report under the ordinance.
Deputy inspector general (DIG), law and order, Praveen Kumar said the incident came to light after taking media reports into consideration. “Instructions have been issued to include the section of the triple talaq ordinance. DGP headquarters are also issuing detailed directions to all district police chiefs about the ordinance and its implementation,” he said
