Vishwajeet upsets Paras in snooker

LUCKNOW Young junior cueist Vishwajeet Mohan’s victory over crowd favourite Paras Gupta was a pleasant surprise on the second day of the 6th North India Open Snooker Tournament, being organized by Lucknow Cue Sports Associatio­n, at the Green Baize here on Wednesday. Paras began the match winning the first frame quite comfortabl­e 86-4 but Vasu showed great temperamen­t for such a young again to came back with a bang to win the next three (52-10, 45-34, 61-59) and the match 3-1. While on the other table Akshay Kumar continued in his form as he defeated Shailender Dangwal 3-1 with a break of 51 in the first frame. India No 1 Sumit Talwar had a bit of a scare as he won his match 3-2 against Delhi young Turk Sanchit Gupta. Though the match a bit scrappy and Sanchit played some great snooker, ultimately it was the experience and the class of India No1 which saved his day as he won the last frame by 85-8.

However, the star of the day was Haryana No 1 and India No 8 Diyva Sharma, who won both his matches in straight frames. In his first match of the day, Divya faced Vishwajeet, who had no answers for Divya as he went down timidly 3-0 with convincing frame scores of 64 (47)-5; 68-25; 49-34. In Divya’s second match of the day, he outplayed Abhniav Garg 78-58, 71-22; 44-17 clearly indicate. The knockout matches begin on Friday.

CONTRASTIN­G WINS

It was a day of contrastin­g wins in the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Football Tournament, at the Chowk Stadium here on Wednesday. Ex-Students Football Club defeated LDA Football Club 3-0, whereas UP Police beat Sports College 4-3 in tie-breaker after the two teams ended in a goalless draw at the end of the regulation time.

Gurunanak Inter College in girls section and Khalsa Inter College in the boys category emerged victorious in the District Inter-School Judo Championsh­ip here on Wednesday. The medal winners included Honey, Vishal Kumar, Adarsh Sonker, Ritik Sonkar, Faheem, Shoib, Tayyab, Akash Kanojia, Saheem, Narendra Kishore, Sujeet, Aditya Kumar, Arvind, Divyanshu Singh, Roshan Kumar, Neerja Bajpai, Ananya, Shipra Dixit, Dolly Rawat, Vandana, Mansi Sonwani, Kavita, Anushka, Agamya, Kushboo Yadav, Radha, Priyanka Kumari, Laxmi Rawat and Nidhi Singh.

BADMINTON TOURNEY

An Inter-Command Badminton Tournament of the Indo Tibetan Border Police for its gazetted officers would begin on Thursday, at the Vijayantkh­and Stadium here at 9.00 a.m.
