LUCKNOW: Two senior citizens and an Army man in his fifties figured in the list of the meritorious students who were felicitated with medals at the 61st convocation of the University of Lucknow (LU) on Tuesday.

Retired Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Rama Shanker Mishra, 65, received seven medals for standing first in the LLB third year examination in 2018.

Mishra said he decided to pursue law soon after his retirement in 2014. “During my service, I had to attend court proceedings. Back then, I was unfamiliar with court functioning. So, soon after retirement, I took a call to study LLB and took admission in a law college in 2015. I studied for long hours and topped the examination. Later, I got registered at the Bar Council and started pursuing this new profession,” he said.

Another student who defied age to achieve his dream is 62-year-old Dr Dharmendra Pratap Singh, who bagged the medal for the best D Litt (Doctor of Letters) thesis in Hindi.

Brigadier Shameer Bhadauria, 52, bagged the gold medal for securing the highest marks (first division) in PG diploma in social duties and human rights.

He took study leave to complete the course, which is run by the JK Institute of Sociology and Human Relations, LU. Brig Bhadauria completed his schooling in 1983 and joined the National Defence Academy.
