Now, Braille information boards at Lucknow zoo
LUCKNOW : The Lucknow zoo has become the first zoo in the country to give detailed information about animals in Braille, said director RK Singh.
The section of Braille information boards has come up in the Nature Interpretation Centre of the zoo.
“We are going to increase the number of such information boards in the hall and trying to get all information about various species of animals in Braille,” he said.
Lucknow zoo can host visually impaired people who want to know about animals and nature through these four sign boards to begin with, said RK Singh.
He said, “On the occasion of World Sight Day, which is observed annually on the second Thursday of October, I can assure that Lucknow zoo will continue the good work for the cause of visually impaired.”
World Sight day is a global event meant to draw attention on blindness and vision impairment. “An NGO ‘Meet Welfare Foundation’ has done the work on behalf of Lucknow zoo. It has been working for the visually impaired for the last few years,” he said. Singh said, “A library for visually impaired is also going to set up where people can come and read books of their choice.”
“I am grateful to the zoo director for understanding the pain of visually impaired and starting a gallery for them to understand what a zoo is all about. As the visually impaired cannot tour much, can come to the hall and understand the ambience of zoo through the signboards in Braille,” said Rohit Kumar Meet of Meet Welfare Foundation. He added, “I have published many books for visually impaired. Now, I have taken this mission to a new place that is the zoo, which is close to nature.”
