Women more prone to arthritis than men, say experts
LUCKNOW :Women are more at risk of suffering from arthritis as compared to men, said experts at a press conference on Thursday.
Briefing media about the World Arthritis Day (October 12) event, Dr Sandeep Kapoor and Dr Sandeep Garg, directors Healthcity Hospital and eminent joint replacement surgeons, said that among 10 cases operated, hardly two are men. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis found among Indians and women in particular are affected with this disease.
Founders of Arthritis Foundation of Lucknow, Dr Kapoor and Dr Garg said osteoarthritis usually troubles women above 65 years of age and among them 45% women show clear symptoms for arthritis while tests revealed about 70% women above 65 years of age have clinical symptoms for osteoarthritis.
Dr Garg said that the manner in which osteoarthritis cases are increasing in the country, it is expected that about 7 million in the country would have the problem and by 2025 India might turn in to a capital of this health problem.
Dr Kapoor said that young people are also becoming patients of arthritis, reasons for which are not clear.
“People should avoid unscientific treatment or treatment from the internet. Early diagnosis and timely treatment ensures better results and can delay surgery. In fact surgery is safe and successful, but should be the last option,” he said.
