Girls given charge of police stations in Kashi
VARANASI: In a symbolic gesture aimed at empowering girls, 15 girls were given charge of as many police stations in Varanasi here to mark the International Day of the Girl Child on Thursday. Working as station house officers (SHOs), the girls understood the functioning of the police and suggested improvements.
They were given an opportunity to hold positions of in-charge at Sigra, Sarnath, Manduwadeeh, Adampura, Shivpur, Cant, Jaitpura, Kotwali, Mahila Thana, Dashashwamedh, Chetganj, Bhelupur, Lanka, Chauk and Luxa police stations.
Khushbu Sahani, a post-graduate in communication, was delighted after holding the post of SHO at Dashashwamedh police station. She took a round of the police station and also called on police personnel and her ‘subordinates’.
“It was a wonderful experience to function as SHO for a day. Constables saluted me as soon as I took the seat. A complaint about a child going missing was received and police officials were instructed to take action in the matter,” Sahani said.
Kajal Kumari, a Class XI student, was equally happy. “The police personnel are doing their duty diligently. Girls should contact the police in case of any trouble,” she said. Alfiya, who worked as station in charge at Chetganj police station, carried out inspection at Arya Mahila PG College. She spoke to the girls and sought information about their problems.
The girls requested her to take measures to solve the traffic problem. Sandhya Shilpkar, ‘police officer’ of Cantt police station, said, “It was a great opportunity. It is almost surreal. Thanks SSP Sir, for giving us the opportunity to understand how the police functions.”
Deputy SP Preeti Tripathi said that there is no shortcut to success. Determination with zeal helps achieve one’s goals.
Senior superintendent of police Sureshrao Anand Kulkarni said that on the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child, the girls were given an opportunity so that they could understand how the police force functions.
