Banda couple held for running fake currency racket

LUCKNOW: The UP Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested a Banda couple for their alleged involvemen­t in running a fake currency racket. The woman was arrested from outside Gahmar railway station of Ghazipur district while carrying fake currency worth Rs 3 lakh on Thursday night. During her interrogat­ion by the ATS, she revealed her husband’s whereabout­s, who was arrested from Banda on Friday morning.

Ghanshyam Gupta, residents of Attara, Banda. He said the woman was arrested on a specific tip off that she was carrying fake currency. Kumar said the woman revealed during interrogat­ion that she was bringing the fake currency from Malda, West Bengal, and got off the train to board a bus from Gahmar. He said the woman got fake currency from Malda in exchange for Rs 1.2 lakh. He said that Anita also revealed that many members of her family were into the fake currency business and she had gone to bring the currency at the behest of her husband.

He said that the initial probe hinted that the woman’s husband was using her for ferrying fake currency. “The entire family is in the illegal trade of counterfei­t currency. They have been to prison several times in the past. Around 12 cases are already lodged against the woman’s husband in several police stations across Banda,” he added.

Kumar said that the ATS team is trying to figure out how the couple was using fake currency and is also tracing the source and other members of their group.
