NEU­RO­SUR­GEON CHARGED WITH RAPE, SEX­UAL ABUSE IN FIR

LUC­KNOW : A woman lodged a com­plaint with Ma­hana­gar po­lice on Satur­day, ac­cus­ing renowned city doc­tor Ravi Dev of rape and sex­ual ha­rass­ment. The woman, 26, has al­leged that the doc­tor, a neu­ro­sur­geon, sex­u­ally abused her for over four years, fol­low­ing which she be­came preg­nant and gave birth to a child in 2015. Con­firm­ing the com­plaint, cir­cle of­fi­cer of Ma­hana­gar Santosh Ku­mar Singh said, “We have lodged an FIR un­der rel­e­vant sec­tions of the In­dian Pe­nal Code on the ba­sis of the woman’s com­plaint and ini­ti­ated in­ves­ti­ga­tion.”

The woman, 26, has al­leged that the doc­tor, a neu­ro­sur­geon, sex­u­ally abused her for over four years, dur­ing which time she be­came preg­nant and gave birth to a child in 2015.

Con­firm­ing the com­plaint, cir­cle of­fi­cer of Ma­hana­gar Santosh Ku­mar Singh said, “We have lodged an FIR un­der rel­e­vant sec­tions of the In­dian Pe­nal Code on the ba­sis of the woman’s com­plaint and ini­ti­ated in­ves­ti­ga­tion.”

The woman also al­leged that she was given a life threat on Fri­day. “A man stopped me in an al­ley and asked me to live as the doc­tor’s mis­tress, else he would kill me and my child,” reads the woman’s com­plaint.

The doc­tor could not be reached for com­ment de­spite sev­eral phone calls.

The sex­ual abuse, ac­cord­ing to the woman, started in De­cem­ber 2013 when she went to the doc­tor for treat­ment of a head in­jury.

sec­ond day for dress­ing, she said. “While dress­ing my wounds, one day he gave me seda­tives and raped me. He even clicked my ob­jec­tion­able pic­tures,” she claimed.

She al­leged the doc­tor showed her these pic­tures to in­tim­i­date her when she re­turned to her clinic for treat­ment of an ul­cer in 2014.

“He started touch­ing me in­ap­pro­pri­ately in his cabin on the pre­text of ex­am­in­ing me. When I re­sisted, he showed me my pic­tures and threat­ened to show them to my fam­ily mem­bers too. He then took me forcibly to a room be­hind his cabin and raped me,” she said.

She al­leged this hap­pened on sev­eral oc­ca­sions and when she ob­jected, the doc­tor promised to marry her.

The woman also worked at the doc­tor’s clinic briefly, look­ing af­ter its man­age­ment.

“I started liv­ing with him in a flat in June, 2014. The doc­tor con­tin­ued to sex­u­ally abuse me and I be­came preg­nant in 2015,” the woman said. “He got an­gry and told me to abort the child but I did not,” she added.

The woman has also ac­cused the doc­tor of phys­i­cal as­sault and sodomy.

“I didn’t speak about this ha­rass­ment fear­ing a so­cial back­lash, but I re­turned to my pa­ter­nal home in 2018,” the woman said, adding, “I was look­ing for a job but he (the ac­cused) is forc­ing me to live as his mis­tress.”

Po­lice have charged the ac­cused un­der Sec­tion 376 (rape), 377 (sodomy), 323 (drug­ging and poi­son­ing), 341 (wrong­ful re­straint), 354 C (voyeurism) and 313/511 (at­tempt to cause mis­car­riage).

In the same FIR, po­lice have also charged his two aides, Pappu Pa­trakar and an­other per­son who posed be­fore the woman as a cop.

“The case is be­ing in­ves­ti­gated by a po­lice team headed by the sta­tion house of­fi­cer of Ma­hana­gar po­lice sta­tion,” said the CO.

“The team took the woman for a med­i­cal ex­am­i­na­tion on Satur­day. We will also pro­pose a pa­ter­nity test of the child,” he added.
