Six hurt in stone pelting on Lord Ram’s tableaux

VARANASI Six people were injured when some anti-social elements allegedly pelted a cavalcade of Lord Ram’s tableaux with stones near old fish market after an argument with members of Ramlila committee in Phoolpur town of Azamgarh district on Sunday, police said.

“Situation is completely under control and normal. A police force has been deployed in the town as a preventive measure. CCTV camera footage is being examined to identify those who indulged in the stone pelting. A case will be registered in this connection and strict action would be taken against them,” said circle officer, Phoolpur, Ravi Shankar Prasad.

As per the police, ‘Bharat Milap’ took place in the town early on Sunday. Thereafter a cavalcade of tableaux on 30 vehicles was being taken out in the town by Ramlila committee members. During the event, a group of youths slapped a youth accompanyi­ng the tableaux.

The police said it led to argument between the youths and those part of the cavalcade. Soon it took ugly turn and both the groups indulged in a fight following which the youths fled. However, they along with over dozen other youths started pelting stones on the tableaux injuring six people. The incident led to a stampede like situation. Ramlila committee members got injured members admitted to a hospital.

DM, SP AMONG 12 INJURED IN CLASHES OVER IMMERSION

GONDA: Twelve people, including the district magistrate and superinten­dent of police, were injured in clashes between two groups over immersion of Goddess Durga idols here, police said on Sunday. The incident took place in Barav village in Katra Bazar area on Saturday night when an argument broke out between the groups over taking the idols through a locality of the minority community for immersion, superinten­dent of police Lallan Singh said. Senior officers reached the spot and tried to pacify the mob, but the unruly crowd blocked the Colonel ganjHujurp ur Road, he said. The crowd later started throwing bricks wherein 12 people, including the DM and SP, were injured, Singh said.
