VARANASI : Setting the target to increase annual carpet export to Rs 25,000 crore by 2022, PM Narendra Modi gave the mantra of 5 Fs to the sector for the prosperity of the weavers and those associated with the industry.

Modi inaugurated the India Carpet Expo being organised at Deendayal Upadhyaya Trade Facilitation Centre here through videoconferencing.

“The government is committed to promoting handicrafts, small and medium industries. We have taken various steps for the same. We are taking technology and facilities to the doorsteps of weavers. We are developing facilities where product is prepared. Indian Carpet expo is a big step in this direction. It is also an important pillar of our five Fs,” Modi said.

“This is an effort to connect farmer and weaver with the global market. We want our weavers and artisans belonging to the carpet industry to prosper and get global recognition. For this our Five Fs mantra is Farm to Fibre, Fibre to Fabric, Fabric to Fashion and Fashion to Foreign,” Modi said.

“We top the world in producing hand-knitted carpets. All this has become possible because of hard work of traders, designers, weavers, craftsmen and policies of the government,” he said.

“At present, India holds 35 percent of world’s carpet market. In next three years, it is likely to increase to 50 percent. Last year, India exported carpets worth Rs 9,000 crore. This is commendable. We have to make efforts to take this figure of carpet export to 25,000 crore by 2022,” Modi added.

Meanwhile, union textile minister Smriti Irani, who presided over the function as the chief guest, said her ministry was making efforts for ensuring school and higher education to children of the weavers. The centre had introduced a scheme for the same, she added.

Mahavir Pratap Sharma, chairman, CEPC, said, “India carpet expo is an ideal platform for international carpet buyers, buying houses, buying agents, architects and Indian carpet manufacturers and exporters to meet and establish long term business relationship.”
