Morgan wins Women’s Indian Open

GURGAON: Becky Morgan, 44, will remember the Hero Women’s Indian Open as the week that ended her search for a win after 18 years as a professional. For Christine Wolf, it will be about what could have been.

After conceding the lead on the 18th late on Saturday, Christine was clear what needed to be done to get back in contention. And that was to remind herself of the “work done the past three days”.

An exception though needed to be made on her woeful record on the 18th. After the quadruple bogey the previous round, a double on the final day at the DLF Golf and Country Club prevented her from forcing a playoff with Becky as she ended in a four-way tie for second.

The two-shot win, seven-under 281, vindicated the Welshwoman’s long-standing belief she could win in India, be it here or at the Delhi Golf Club. Travelling from the US – Becky also plays the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) – hasn’t been easy, but each time she told herself “this (India) is the place where I can win as the courses suit my game.”

Teeing off with a share of the lead, Becky did a few things on Sunday that haven’t been a part of her regimen for the final day, simply because it hasn’t been often that she’s been in contention. Acting on a friend’s advice, she wrote “I’m calm and in control” on each page of the yardage book and kept telling herself on every hole that all would be well.

“Now that the lid is off” and she has won, the ploy of not looking at the scores will be followed more often. Becky’s run in the wilderness has been long and testing, but now that she has won, the focus will be on the Ladies European Tour as that’s where she has found warmth.
