LUCKNOW: A meeting of vicechancellors of state universities of Uttar Pradesh was held at the Lucknow University (LU) here on Tuesday to discuss measures for improving the security on the campuses.

There are more than 25 universities in the state, but V-Cs of less than 8 universities attended it.

While some of the V-Cs voiced their concerns over crucial issues on campuses, many of their counterparts did not participate in the discussion.

The participating vice-chancellors were of the view that the teachers on campuses were supposed to teach and maintain discipline and not fight the hooligans in the varsity, said LU spokesperson NK Pandey.

They also expressed their concerns on the law and order conditions on their campuses.

The V-Cs also chalked out various measures to improve the security on the campuses.

After due deliberations, the consensus that emerged are: The student care should be strengthened at various levels in the universities so that the students do not face any problems.

A meeting of the coordination committee, formed between the universities and district administrations earlier, must be mandatory and held once a month. The decisions taken in the meeting should also be implemented in letter and spirit.

If a person, who is not a student of the university or a former student who is expelled by the varsity administration, enters the campus, the act should be treated as that of criminal trespassing and action should be taken accordingly under appropriate acts of the CrPC.

The meeting was held in reference to the incidence of violence and hooliganism on July 4 on the LU campus. The district administration had not cooperated in the matter.

In course of the hearings, the high court had sought advice in writing from the state government and the LU both to improve the security at academic institutions. Later, the court wanted the advice to be combined into one.
