VARANASI: A group of students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Tuesday accused a professor of making obscene gestures to girls during an academic tour to Puri (Odisha), university officials said.

The students also submitted a written complaint against Prof SK Chaube of zoology department to BHU vice chancellor Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar after which a probe was ordered into the matter.

“Investigation is being carried out as per standard procedures. Strict action will be ensured against the professor if allegations against him are found to be true,” Prof Bhatnagar said.

The women’s grievance cell of the university is carrying out the probe. “A probe is underway in the matter and a report will be submitted to the VC soon,” said Prof Sushma Ghildiyal, a member of women’s grievance cell.

A student, pleading anonymity, said a group of students had gone for an academic tour to Orissa. “Prof SK Chaube accompanied the group to Puri where he took us to Konark Temple instead of Nandan Kanan Zoological Park. He passed vulgar comments and made obscene gestures to girls,” the student said

After returning from the tour about a week ago, the students decided to lodge a written complaint with the VC.

Meanwhile, head of zoology department Prof JK Roy chaired a meeting of teachers where it was decided that Prof Chaubey would not be assigned any important task in the fifth semester examination till the probe is underway. When contacted, Prof Chaubey refused to comment on the allegations.
