Sonbhadra’s Chopan town area chairman shot dead; one held

VARANASI:The Chopan town area chairman was shot dead by two assailants in Preet Nagar area, under Chopan police station, in Sonbhadra district on Thursday morning, police said.

The cause of the killing is not known.

According to police, locals informed them that 45-year-old Imtiyaz Ahmad was out on a morning walk when the assailants fired at him from point blank range.

He suffered bullet injuries in both thighs.

Brandishin­g their weapons, the assailants tried to flee the scene.

Police said one of them managed to flee the scene but locals managed to catch the other after a chase.

The locals beat him up badly and handed him over to police.

The assailants used a carbine in the attack.

Additional superinten­dent of police Awadhesh Singh said the arrested accused has been identified as one Paswan. “He is badly injured. A probe has begun to ascertain the cause of the attack,” he added.

The badly injured Ahmad was rushed to the district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Chief medical superinten­dent of the district hospital Dr PB Gautam said that excess bleeding led to Ahmad’s death.

Sonbhadra superinten­dent of police Kirit Rathaud said a case has been registered against four persons, including Rakesh Jaiswal, Ravi Jalan and Paswan, on a complaint by the deceased’s brother Usman Ahmad.

The SP said the arrested accused was sent to Varanasi for treatment and added that the other accused would be nabbed soon.

This was Ahmad’s second consecutiv­e term as town area chairman.

He contested civic polls as an independen­t candidate.

Locals staged a demonstrat­ion against the incident and blocked Shakti Nagar-Varanasi road demanding the arrest of the accused.

They lifted ban only after the police assured them of action.
