UP lose in Mankad Trophy quarters, but shine in Merchant Trophy and eves T20

LUCKNOW : It was a mixed day for Uttar Pradesh in junior cricket on Monday. Former champions in the Under-19 Vinoo Mankad Trophy, they lost to Rajasthan by 60 runs in a quarterfin­al match at Nagpur, but under-19 girls defeated Odisha by 31 runs at Mulapadu.

UP’s under-16 team also pocketed vital three points on the basis of the first innings lead against Madhya Pradesh in their Central Zone encounter of the Vijay Merchant Trophy in Allahabad.

While chasing 258 in overs, UP batsmen never got the going easy and collapsed for 197 in 48.1 overs, at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha (Nagpur). Barring Aryan Sharma (44, 84b, 3x4), Aanjaneya Suryavansh­i (25, 26b, 4x4, 1x6) and Kritagya K Singh (36, 44b, 4x4) no other UP batsman could show some resistance before the Rajasthan bowlers.

RM Bishnoi (5/30) and RA Choudhary (3/38) demolished UP batting. Earlier, SA Ahuja (77, 71b, 9x4, 2x6), HK Joshi (57, 113, 3x4), SV Joshi (56, 33b, 9x4, 2x6) and DR Gajraj (35, 49b, 4x4, 2x6) helped Rajasthan score 257 in 50 overs.

Young left-hand batsman Siddarth Yadav struck his careerbest unbeaten 238 on Monday as formercham­pionsUttar­Pradesh collected three points on the basis of the first innings lead against Madhya Pradesh, at the Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium.

Resuming at the overnight score of his personal 139, Siddarth kept toying with MP bowlers even on the final day of three-day tie, hammering unbeaten 238, which came off 322 balls with the help of 25 boundaries and two sixes as Uttar Pradesh declared their first innings at 406/6 in 136 overs with a lead of 188 while chasing MP’s first innings total of 218.

MP in their second innings were 156/2 in 37 overs when the two captains agreed for a draw, splitting points. Adarsh Dubey (57, 103b, 8x4) and Shubham Kushwah (55*, 84b, 5x4) scored half centuries. Kunal Tyagi had both the wickets for UP.

Now, UP travel to Raipur to play their next league match against hosts Chhattisga­rh from November 1, at the Shaeed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium.

ANJALI EXCELS

At the Chukkapall­i Pitchaih Cricket Ground in Mulapadu, it was young Anjali Singh, who anchored UP’s second successive win in Under-19 Super League Group A, brushing aside Odisha.

Anjali first scored 39-ball 45 with the help of six hits to the fence and a four to guide UP post a challengin­g 116/6 in 20 overs while batting first after winning the toss, and later took three for 10 to see Odisha making 85/9 in 20 overs. Shipra Giri too scored 39 with three fours.
