School taekwondo begins on Thursday

LUCKNOW : Over 1000 taekwondo exponents from all parts of the country are expected to participat­e in the three-day 1st School Nationals Championsh­ip, beginning Thursday, at the GD Goenka Public School here. The championsh­ip is open for both boys and girls in U-14, U-17 and U-19 categories. Winners of this championsh­ip will take part in SGFI National Championsh­ip in November at Imphal, Nadiad, and at Vidisha.

The winner of this championsh­ip will take part in the World Combat Games at Chinese Taipei in 2019.

VASUNDHARA EXCELS

Vasundhara Khanna was crowned CCBW Chess Princess 2018 at Lucknow’s strongeste­ver girls’ chess tournament here. She scored a perfect six, beating all the top players. Adrika Mishra scored five for the second place and Maitreyi Gupta was third on better tiebreak score with four points.

In the age-group sections, Kopal Vishwakarm­a and Saanvi Mehrotra were first and second in the under-16 group. Kaumudi Jain and Vartika Verma were first and second in under-13 agegroup. Simran Sadhwani and Aditi Mohan were first and second in the under-11 age-group. Saanvi Agarwal and Prisha Garg were first and second in the under-9 age-group.

The most exciting game of the tournament was for third place where Maitreyi was up against top Seed Kaumudi Jain. Kaumudi was set to win with pawn advancemen­t for the third place, but one blunder in the endgame cost her the point and the third place.

Adrika Mishra used a beautiful kingside attack to checkmate the higher rated Saanvi Agarwal in the last round. Alisha Khan, at seven years was the youngest player at the tournament. Avi Mehrotra also became the youngest chess tournament director of India by conducting the rounds, overseeing the pairings and scheduling the conduct of the tournament. The consolatio­n prizes went to Myra Agarwal, Alisha Khan, Riddhima Goel and Yashita Tandon.

SPECIAL CAMP

A high performanc­e cricket camp in memory of Subodh Srivastava was organised by the Akhil Infra Cricket Club here. The purpose of the camp is to provide player with better exposure to the game. Former India A cricketer Vishwajit Sinha, ex-Ranji Trophy batsman Kamal Kant Kanaujia are conducting the camp, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium.

CAL LEAGUE

It was a day of convincing wins in the CAL’s D division cricket league here on Monday. Standard Club defeated Lucknow Hunterz Club by seven wickets, KD Singh ‘Babu’ Club beat JK Sports Club by seven runs, RBM Global Club beat Bharat Club by nine wickets and Bright way Club beat UP Rangers by 71 runs.
