VIJAYAWADA: A class 9 student of an aided school in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, had her throat slashed by her teacher for reportedly rejecting his love proposals on Saturday, police said.

The 30-year-old Hindia teacher, identified as Shankar, went to the girl’s house at Bangarupeta in Kurnool in an inebriated condition and allegedly attacked her with a knife.

Later, he also knifed himself in the throat. Police admitted both in a local government hospital. The 13-year old from the washermen community reportedly suffered cuts in the throat but her condition is out of danger, said the hospital sources.

Shankar targeted the girl when her parents were away. He had also managed to send out her younger brother on some pretext. The girl raised an alarm soon after Shankar allegedly barged into the house and attacked her. Neighbours who gathered in good strength rescued the girl, thrashed Shankar and handed him over to police.

Human resource development minister Ganta Srinviasa Rao took strong exception of the attack and instructed Kurnool district education officer to remove Shankar from the job.

Shankar, working as a vidya volunteer in Rockwood High School, has been accused of stalking the girl for the last one year.

Kurnool deputy superintendent of police Yugandhar Babu said the accused had been pressurising her parents to marry off the girl with him. The parents however declined the proposal, saying she is a minor.
