NEW DELHI Delhi University students’ Union (DUSU) president’s Ankiv Baisoya alleged fake degree case seems to have created a rift within the varsity.

The department of Buddhist Studies, which is investigating the matter, said it is waiting the administration’s nod to visit the Tamil Nadu-based Thiruvalluvar University to verify Baisoya’s degree.

The registrar’s office denied receiving any such travel request by Saturday evening. Delhi University (DU) has two days to wrap up the inquiry against Baisoya because the Delhi high court on October 30 had given it a deadline of November 12.

The department, where Baisoya is enrolled, had on Thursday said it would send an official to Thiruvalluvar University after the latter did not respond to their queries despite reminders.

But department officials on Saturday said university registrar Tarun Das’ office has not approved the visit despite contacting him several times in the last two days.

Head of DU’s department of Buddhist studies KT Sarao, who is heading the probe committee, said he has not received any official approval from the registrar’s office. “There is a process to get permission for official travel and we have to take the administration’s approval. We had sent the papers to the registrar’s on Thursday and Friday but have not received anything as of now,” he said.

Two other committee members told HT the applications has been sent to the registrar’s office for approval. “We had received a letter from the registrar’s office on Friday night, rapping the department for taking this lastminute decision to visit Thiruvalluvar University. But we have no other option,” said a members requesting anonymity.

Tarun Das refused to comment, saying the matter was sub judice. Officials in his office said they had not received any request from the department till Saturday evening. The committee member said they would go on Sunday on their own funds. “We will have to produce something before the court on Monday,” the member said.
