Young Paavani bags a golden double in district badminton

LUCKNOW : Young Paavani Kalra hogged the limelight in the Johnny District Badminton Championsh­ip, winning a golden double, at the Vinay Khand Stadium here on Sunday.

Paavni first defeated Kavya Kushwaha 21-16, 21-16 in straight games to win the girls under-15 singles title, and then defeated Nehal Mittal 21-13, 21-12 in the under-17 singles final.

Earlier, energetic Bhumesh Uttarani of UP Badminton Academy won the boys under-15 singles title, scoring a thrilling 2-1 win over academy-mate Aabhash Kumar here on Sunday.

Bhumesh even after losing the first game by 16-21, staged a superb comeback and won the remaining two and match too by 21-16 and 21-16.

PAC Stadium’s Prateek walked away with boys under-10 title, defeating Sanskar 21-13, 21-15, whereas boys under-13 title went to Prabhas Kushwaha, who defeated Farhan Khan 21-12, retd.

In under-13 doubles final, Farhan Khan pairing with Prabhash, defeated the duo of Shivam Yadav and Subhash 21-18, 21-17.

Shanker Kuldeep with five points emerged victorious in the Open Chess Tournament here on Sunday. Pawan Batham with 4.5 points and Ravi Shanker with 3.5 points finished second and third, respective­ly. Ridam Nigam in under-10, Vamsi Krishna A in under-14 and Bhaumik Pandey in under-16 also finished top in their respective categories.

FINE BOWLING

Himanshu bagged 4/6, whereas Vimal and Atharv shared four wickets between them to help Aryavart Cricket Academy win the BN Rama Cricket Series, defeating SSCA by 70 runs in the final, at the Aryavart College Ground here on Sunday.

ACA scored 141 in 28 overs while batting first after winning the toss. Vimal top scored with 28, which came off 40 balls with the help of three hits to the fence. Ashish Raj and Ujjwal made 24 runs each.

For SSCA, Yasharth Nigam and Ajay Kumar took three wickets each. In reply, SSCA could make 71/9 in 25.1 overs. Barring opener Utsav Pandey, who made 12, no other batsman could touch the double figure mark.

UP’s new men’s singles champion Divyansh Srivastava of Lucknow has been picked for the Indian junior and sub-junior table tennis coaching camp, starting at Patiala from November 17. A trainee of Yogendra Agarwal at the Northern Railway Table Tennis Academy, Divyansh would be representi­ng India in the ITTF Premium Junior Circuit Portugal Junior and Cadet Open Championsh­ip, scheduled to be held from November 27 to 30, if selected after the camp. “I am very confident of Divyansh making it to the Indian squad for the big event,” his coach Yogendra said on Sunday.
