LUCKNOW: The death of a 31-yearold man in an ‘accident’ last week turned out to be a planned murder following the confessions of the accused who were arrested by the police on Monday.

The deceased, Banwari Lal, was found dead near Sultanpur road under Gosainganj police station last Wednesday. A damaged car was found near his body that was placed carefully to portray the death as a road accident.

On Monday, the police arrested the owner of the car and four others.

“We have arrested the main accused Suresh Tiwari along with M Singh, Ajay Kumar, Rinku and Phool Chandra for the murder of Banwari Lal. During interrogation, the accused revealed that Suresh planned the murder following personal discord with Banwari,” said SSP (Lucknow) Kalanidhi Naithani.

The police said Suresh, a property dealer, and the deceased were from the same village.

“They recently had a dispute over some personal matter, after which Suresh decided to murder Banwari and approached the other accused. They picked Banwari on the pretext of celebrating Diwali and drove him to a local bar. They then took the car to the Lucknow-Hardoi border and killed Banwari using sticks,” he said.

After killing Banwari, they placed his dead body on the side of the road and pushed the car into a ditch along the road. “They did so to portray the murder as an accident.

However, the police team that reached the spot doubted the theory and began investigation,” the officer informed.

Police charged the accused under relevant sections of IPC. The accused were presented before court and sent to judicial custody.
