LUCKNOW: Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) conferred 116 medals to its meritorious students at its 5th convocation held here on Monday.

Around 44 students bagged gold medals, 33 silver and 35 bagged bronze medals. Besides, degrees were awarded to around 507 female and 389 male students enrolled in several graduation and post-graduation programmes.

Four gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals were bagged by specially-abled students. Shaban Ali, whose right hand had to be amputated from elbow at the age of 18 after it came in contact with the high tension wire, was all smiles after his name was announced in the list of silver medal winners.

“I had never imagined that I would be honoured with this medal. Though it was not easy to write with one hand, I am thankful to my parents, teachers who motivated me throughout and helped me secure good marks,” said Ali.

He has secured 52.25% in graduation. He has now enrolled in a special BEd course and intends to become a teacher. He said he had practiced hard to learn to write from his left hand. It took almost three years for him to learn writing from another hand after his right hand had to be amputated.

Sanjeev Kumar, another student who was born with visual impairment, secured 63.45% in BEd special course and was awarded Dr Shakuntala Misra Memorial gold medal.

“It is a moment of joy and happiness for me,” he said. Sanjeev and his three brothers were all blind since birth. His parents were worried about their future. Yet they ensured that all their sons got proper education.

Keshari Nath Tripathi, governor of West Bengal, who was the chief guest on the occasion said that it was good to see specially-abled students giving tough competition to the regular lots.

He also cited several other examples to highlight their strong determination and will. Ram Naik, Governor of Uttar Pradesh said that UP girls were taking a giant leap when it comes to bag medals, award and degrees. “It clearly hints towards woman empowerment in the state. It is the outcome of the foolproof education policy laid by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” the governor said.
