Rare pictures of pre-Independence era on display
LUCKNOW: Day 1 of IIM-L’s annual cultural and sports fest on Friday also saw a grand photo exhibition highlighting the pre-Independence India.
Set up by Adrienne Plantureux, an IIM-Lucknow student who hails from Paris, the exhibition displayed around 29 rare photographs of pre-Independence India, clicked by an English photographer, Samuel Borne, between 1863 and 1871AD.
Plantureux, who is part of IIM-L’s exchange programme, said Bourne was a photography enthusiast and a banker based in London. “Samuel Borne captured these beautiful pictures of India during his stay in India from 1863 to 1871,” said Plantureux. She said these pictures were procured by her family in an auction, held in London, almost a year back.
“I have put these rare pictures on display to tell the youths about the glorious past,” she added.
Of these, 29 pictures related to heritage structures of the state capital remained the main attraction. A photo of Bada Imambada clicked in 1863, Chhota Imambada and other nawabi era structures were a few that were on display.
“It’s interesting to see how these structures looked almost 150 years back. They are architectural marvels as no other structures could survive for so long,” said Sushant Singh, a student from IIM-L.
The photographs of Borah Bazar in Mumbai, Bharatpur Fort in Rajasthan and those from Shimla, Delhi, Darjeeling and Sri Lanka were also on display.
