LUCKNOW : Issuing a warning to unfit cops, chief minister Yogi Adityanath told the state police top brass to ensure that fat and unfit policemen were not put in charge of police stations. He directed senior police officials to give preference to fit cops who could work hard in the field when posted at police stations.

The CM said all pot bellied cops should be sidelined so that there was some pressure on police personnel to keep themselves fit. “The CM said fits cops were required to be posted out in the field for curbing crime and implementing crime prevention tactics,” said a senior police official present at the CM’s review meeting late on Sunday night.

The CM asked the district police chiefs to be present in their offices at least for 2-3 hours in the morning so that they could directly attend public grievances if they were not addressed at the police station level. The CM, along with UP DGP OP Singh, also interacted with the heads of different police units and districts police chiefs during the marathon review meeting that lasted over three hours.

Other then crime control and crime prevention, the CM also focused on improving traffic situation in the state. “Unsatisfied with the police traffic wing head, he ordered transfer of ADG traffic MK Bashal and to initiate an inquiry against circle officer (traffic) of Gorakhpur Santosh Singh over alleged corruption charges,” said the official. Singh was suspended late at night.

Yogi also asked the police officials to come up with a new plan to solve traffic snarls in cities.

The CM warned that any laxity would invite stringent punishment. “Sudhar jayiye, warna hum sudhaar denge (Behave, or I will teach you how to behave)”, he told the officials. He also directed the district police chiefs of Ghaziabad, Noida, Sitapur, Jaunpur, Rampur, Ambedkarnagar, Bareilly, Bulandshahr and Allahabad to ensure that soaring crime graph was brought down and cases solved quickly.

The chief minister said police must ensure that criminals feared the law of the land. He also asked more than a dozen district police chiefs whether or not footpatrolling was being conducted.
