‘Plastic surgery not limited to cosmetic surgery only’

-

LUCKNOW: The 53rd annual conference of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India was inaugurated here on Thursday. The four-day event will have various scientific sessions on different diseases and congenital problems in children.

After the inaugural session, a scientific session on congenital deformities was conducted.

Dr Vaibhav Khanna, the organizing secretary of the conference, spoke on the congenital deformity of cleft lip and palate, while Dr Giorjio De Santis from Italy spoke on tissue and breast expansion procedure for the patients of breast cancer.

“The role of plastic surgery has changed and it needs to be understood so that the benefit can be passed on to patients for rehabilitation,” said Dr RK Mishra, coordinating the scientific sessions.

Dr Adarsh Kumar said that surgeries for problems like craniopagus (two children born with heads joined) need a neurosurgeon but equally important is the role of a plastic surgeon.

“Surgery of jaws, trauma and facial injury, all has a role for plastic surgeons. Plastic surgery is not limited to cosmetic surgery only,” said Dr Khanna.

Experts from across the country will chair scientific sessions on Friday and discuss latest methods of surgery with the participating surgeons. Over 700 plastic surgeons have come to attend the sessions.
