LUCKNOW: Water supply in Gomti Nagar and Indira Nagar will be normalised from Friday. Supply to these areas was hit after annual maintenance work began at Sharda Canal, which supplies water to Kathauta lake.

Water level in the lake reduced to a dangerous level and that’s why Jal Sansthan had started cut in water supply hours in Indira Nagar and Gomti Nagar.

As a result, nearly 5 lakh residents were battling water shortage for the last few days.

In the absence of water from Sharda Canal, the level of Kathauta lake (that supplies water to these areas) was reduced, said an official of Jal Sansthan.

However on Wednesday, after the intervention of minister of medical education Ashutosh Tandon, the irrigation department agreed to release water into Kathauta lake through Sharda Canal from Thursday night.

“I have called irrigation minister Dharmpal Singh for release of water to Kathauta lake, which is the main source of supply to areas like Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar, Khurram Nagar, Ismailganj and Chinhat.

He has agreed to start water supply within 24 hours,” said Tandon.

The minister said he has directed the municipal commissioner to remain in touch with officials of irrigation department for release of water into the lake.

Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia had also taken up the matter of early repair of Sharda Canal with the irrigation minister.

But now after intervention of the minister, irrigation department has agreed to release the water in 24 hours.

IN THE ABSENCE OF WATER FROM SHARDA CANAL, THE LEVEL OF KATHAUTA LAKE (THAT SUPPLIES WATER TO THESE AREAS) WAS REDUCED, SAID AN OFFICIAL OF JAL SANSTHAN.
