AGRA: Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Agra Amit Pathak conducted a surprise check at Bijlighar crossing on Tuesday and arrested two drivers and two conductors of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses for causing jam and violating traffic norms.

Besides, eight auto rickshaws were also seized during the drive and five auto rickshaws and one roadways bus were challaned. In protest of the arrests, the workers union of the UPSRTC has threatened to keep away from their duties.

On Tuesday, the SSP reached Bijlighar crossing for inspection in civilian dress. The Bijlighar crossing, despite being a busy crossing, witnesses prolonged jams due to incorrectly parked roadways buses and auto rickshaws. He spotted two UPSRTC buses parked at the no parking zone near the Bijlighar crossing for boarding passengers.

“The drivers and conductors had parked their buses in middle

of the road resulting in jam. So, a case under section 332 of the IPC and 122/123/207 of the Motor Vehicle Act was registered against the drivers and conductor of both the buses and they were arrested,” read the statement issued by the media cell of the Agra police.

The arrested drivers were Mukesh Kumar and Braj Pal and the conductors were Vijay Kishore and Suraj Pachori. The step was welcomed by the citizens who frequently face such jams in the city.

However, Samvida Karamchari Union (SKU) affiliated to

Hind Majdoor Sabha (HMS) of UP has condemned the arrest.

‘The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) officials ask to board more passengers for which drivers stop the bus near Bijlighar crossing. There are many other vehicles which cause the jam but only drivers and conductors of roadways were arrested,” said Krishna Kant Arela, branch head of SKU of JNURM in Agra.

“The SSP’s action was totally uncalled-for and if such action continues than none of the drivers or conductors would move the buses in the city,” he said.
