LUCKNOW : To reduce staff shortage and strengthen security across 70 prisons in the state, the UP government will recruit 3,638 jail guards or warders, including 626 women warders. The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board announced on Thursday that the recruitment process would begin from December 8.

The vulnerability of UP jails came to the fore after gangster Munna Bajrangi was shot dead by another hardened criminal Sunil Rathi inside Baghpat district jail, this year. Only 33 staff members, including a jailer, three deputy jailers, head warders and warders, were posted to ensure the security of Baghpat district jail where 816 prisoners, including 173 convicted criminals, were lodged.

A senior prison and reforms department official said there was a huge shortage of guards across state prisons. He said that fresh recruitment would reduce the problem to some extent in prisons, including five central jails, 59 district jails, three other jails, a model jail, a women’s prison and a juvenile home in Lucknow.

“The process of hiring jail guards was initiated earlier, but was cancelled in December 2016. Now, process has been initiated again for recruiting 3,012 male warders and 626 female warders. In the men’s category, there are 1,507 posts for general category candidates, 813 posts for Other Backward Castes, 632 posts for Scheduled Castes and 60 posts for Scheduled Tribes. In the women’s category, 314 posts are for general category candidates, 169 for OBCs, 131 for SCs and 12 for STs,” said the official.

He said aspirants could apply from December 8 and the last date for submitting applications was December 28. “The last date for submitting the fee of ₹400 is December 31. For further details, aspirants can visit the UP Police Promotion and Recruitment Board website,” he added.
