BBAU row: Engg exams deferred

-

LUCKNOW : Following protest by students, Prof Kaman Singh, director of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), tendered his resignation from the post on Monday. The resignation was accepted, informed vicechancellor NMP Verma.

“The competent authority has accepted the resignation of Prof Kaman Singh as director UIET with immediate effect. The decision on the appointment of the new director will be taken shortly,” read an order issued by BBAU registrar, RB Ram.

Prof Singh was accused of attacking students during a protest they staged on campus to get the end-semester examinations postponed. The V-C said that the students’ demand for postponing engineering examinations, earlier scheduled to start from December 7, had also been accepted. The exams would now start from January 7, confirmed the V-C, adding that the decision was jointly arrived at by the students and the resource person of the engineering department. “The end-semester examination will be organised from the first to the third week of January 2019. The exam schedule will be finalised by the new director,” said Ram. Kaman Singh said the students were against him, as he had put an end to large-scale copying, which was prevalent in engineering examinations. “It was because of this that the students were protesting against me,” he said. Meanwhile, the V-C said that the university’s proctorial team was probing into the late Friday night incident, when engineering students and Prof Singh had allegedly exchanged blows on campus. Later, the students had lodged a complaint at the Ashiana police station, accusing Prof Singh of attacking them.
