‘Modular prosthesis offers better mobility over conventional one’
LUCKNOW: The demand for modular artificial limbs was rising and 30% of those in need were opting for this category of prosthesis, said an expert at a programme organised at the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) to mark the International Day of Persons with Disability.
Explaining the types of artificial limbs or prostheses available, Arvind Nigam, workshop manager at the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, KGMU, said, “The modular (endoskeletal) prosthesis offers better ‘human loco-movement’ (over conventional or exoskeletal prosthesis), thereby conserving energy.”
Elaborating on how the modular limbs offered improved performance, he said, “For example, if a person can walk 2km using conventional prosthesis, the modular one can help him / her walk around 5km with the same energy level.”
Nigam said both options of modular and conventional prostheses were presented to all patients.
“About 30% go for modular ones although they cost more. This is particularly true for patients who need artificial limbs below waist level,” he said.
Modular prostheses were introduced just two years ago, while conventional ones have been available since 1971.
“Conventional skeletal prostheses have a hard outer plastic shell with wood interior.
Modular prostheses have inner support composed of lighter material. The style of these artificial limbs (modular) is generally more suited for people with active lifestyles,” said Nigam.
Shedding light on the expenses involved, he said, “The modular prosthesis is more costly. If a conventional limb costs ₹4000, the modular one may cost up to ₹18000. However, in market, such a prosthesis will cost about ₹75,000.”
Nigam said the prostheses covered under the central government’s Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme gave patients the option to choose and beneficiaries often opted for the modular option.
“If the cost goes down further, we can expect an even greater demand,” he said.
On the occasion, several events, including sports, were organised.
