LUCKNOW: Breakdown of a heavy duty vehicle caused a threehour-long traffic jam on Shaheed Path during peak office hours on Monday morning.

Vehicles coming from Kanpur and Sultanpur towards Gomti Nagar took over 40 minutes to cover the 4-kilometre stretch from near the Ekana Stadium to the underpass in Vibhuti Khand.

A dumper laden with construction material had broken down near the underpass. The police used cranes to shift the vehicle, but in vain.

A bottleneck was created when the vehicle was shifted slightly to one side of the road.

“We sought assistance from other authorities to move the vehicle,” said Triloki Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Gomti Nagar.

Consequently, other vehicles got stuck leading to an over 2-km-long jam.

The situation worsened when some people tried to reverse their vehicle and got stuck in traffic.

The absence of police officials added to the chaos.

The situation improved around mid day when additional cops were rushed to the spot and that prevented movement of heavy vehicles.

Meanwhile, SSP (Lucknow) Kalanidhi Naithani went to several traffic-prone places in Lucknow and took stock of the traffic situation there.

He visited the area near St Francis’ College and Loreto crossing in the afternoon.

“We have identified several points where the traffic jams occur. I have asked officials to suggest solutions to resolve traffic issues.”

The officer also called a meeting of officials concerned to discuss traffic issues.
