A map of India made with chrysanthemums is a big draw for the crowd
LUCKNOW: Row upon row of colourful blooms with their delicate fragrance wafting in the air offered a feast for the eyes as the two-day Chrysanthemum and Coleus Show – 2018 began at the central lawn of the botanic garden of CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute here on Saturday. A map of India made with chrysanthemums was the cynosure of all eyes.
The flower show provided an opportunity to the public not only to enjoy but also know more about chrysanthemums and coleus.
This is a once-a -year occasion where people can see the entire diversity of colours, types, shapes and cultivation practices of chrysanthemums.
The various R&D activities on chrysanthemum and coleus undertaken by CSIR-NBRI were displayed and explained properly.Anandi Subramanian, senior economic advisor, ministry of environment, forest and climate change, Government of India inaugurated the show. SK Tewari, convener of the show informed that 132 exhibitors participated in the show with a total of 1215 exhibits.
King of the Show: Ranjit Singh Memorial Trophy for a specimen pot of large-flowered chrysanthemum with single plant bearing a single bloom was bagged by Manju Shanker, a resident of Vrindavan Yojna, Lucknow.
Queen of the Show: Smt Ranjit Singh Memorial Trophy- for a specimen pot of small-flowered chrysanthemum was won by La Martiniere College, Lat area, Lucknow.
Prince of the Show: Quazi Syed Masood Hasan Running Challenge Trophy for a specimen pot of spider bearing single bloom was bagged by Swati Gupta, Viram Khand, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.
Flower of the Year ‘Sonar Bangla’: Ram Kishore Sharma Memorial Trophy for a specimen pot of large flowered chrysanthemum with single plant bearing single bloom won by Manju Shanker, Vrindavan Yojna, Lucknow.
The best specimen coleus: Smt Kumud Rastogi Memorial Runnning Challenge Trophy for the best specimen coleus pot of the show was won by headquarters, Central Command, Lucknow.
Before the show was opened for the public, panels of judges judged the exhibits in different sections of the show.
The show will remain open for the general public on December 9 (Sunday) from 10 am to 6pm and it will conclude with prize distribution to winners at 4pm.
UP minister for technical education and medical education, Ashutosh Tandon would be the chief guest of the prize distribution function, informed PA Shirke, chief scientist and head, information and publication, CSIR-NBRI.
