LUCKNOW: A cleanliness awareness programme was organised by Swacch Vatawaran Protsahan Samiti at the GPO on Saturday, on the theme ‘Lucknow Swacch Rahe Swastha Rahe” (Lucknow should remain clean and healthy). The participants pledged to catapult the city to the top in cleanliness ranking.

Minister of state for women and child development Swati Singh launched the campaign for distributing bins among the masses. Coordinator and brand ambassador for Swacch Bharat Mission, Lucknow Dr Vaibhav Khanna, said the event was being organised to make people understand the important of cleanliness.

“If we keep ourselves and our surroundings clean, we can actually save money by avoiding illness caused by poor hygiene,” said Dr Khanna.

He said that if one did not fall ill, one could work well. “Going to a doctor and taking medicines is not only costly but also reduces working days,” he said.

Swacch Vatawaran Protsahan Samiti coordinator Sunil Kumar Mishra, district magistrate DM Kaushal Raj Sharma and social worker Suchit Seth interacted with the people and explained the importance of cleanliness.

All those who were given bins were asked to use them for collecting garbage and throw the same at a proper place instead of dumping it anywhere. “People responded in a positive manner and we hope this awareness spreads so that Lucknow emerges first in cleanliness ranking,” said Dr Khanna.
