Counting reaches last leg, results likely this week

LUCKNOW: The much awaited results of the UP Bar Council election are likely to be declared by the end of this week, with the counting process reaching the last lap after seven months.

Justice Rajmani Chauhan, former judge of the Allahabad high court, is election officer and justice Surendra Singh, former judge of the Allahabad high court, is observer.

In the counting process till date, three candidates have been declared elected, including Ajay Yadav and Imran Mabood Khan of Allahabad and Shiv Kishore Gaur of Bulandshah­r .

Around 1.28 lakh lawyers verified by the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh, out of the total 1.67 lakh verified lawyers, had exercised their right to vote in the election. Voting took place in four phases on March 23, 24 and March 27, 28 and counting began on May 10.

The election was for 25 members of the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. These 25 members will elect chairman of the UP Bar Council through an internal process. As many as 298 candidates took part in the electoral process.

The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh is an apex body of lawyers of the state, a statutory organisati­on constitute­d under the AdvocatesA­ct,1961. Chairmanof­UP Bar Council wields considerab­le clout and takes up all issues related with lawyers with the state government.

“After almost seven months, counting of votes for the UP Bar Council election has reached the last stage. By the end of this week results are likely to be declared,” said Sri Nath Mishra, former member of the UP Bar Council.

Co-chairman, Bar Council of India, S Prabakaran is reviewing the counting process.

Counting of votes takes place in alphabetic­al order of districts starting with Agra and ending with Varanasi.
