LUCKNOW : With a fine all-round performance Shiva Singh on Monday put former champions Uttar Pradesh on the verge of a victory against hosts Maharashtra in their four-day Under-23 CK Nayudu Trophy match at Pune.

Tailender Shiva Singh first struck an 18-ball 28, which contained two fours and three sixes, to help Uttar Pradesh take a thrilling three-run first innings lead, and then took 4/50 to get Maharashtra out for paltry 149 in the second innings.

Now, Uttar Pradesh need 147run to score a win with all 10 wickets in hand as the second day’s proceedings came to an end at the stroke of last wicket fall of Maharashtra, at the Deccan Gymkhana Cricket Ground.

Barring Yash Kshirsagar (52) and MM Sayyad (44) no other Maharashtra batsman could impress the visiting bowlers. Trishal Vijay Trivedi (2/45) also bowled well, whereas Wajid Ali, Harshvardhan and Sandeep Kumar took a wicket each.

Earlier, chasing Maharashtra’s first innings total of 344, Uttar Pradesh were eight down for 331 with tailenders on the crease struggling for runs. But Shiva Singh’s cameo made all the difference at the end.

He along with Harshvardhan (2*) scored 16 runs on 11 balls to give the side a three-run lead before being caught by MS Trunkwala off OK Akhade.

Last man Wajid Ali too got out on the same score in the next over while being trapped leg before by SD Warghante
