GORAKHPUR: Months after renaming of Mughal Sarai railway station on Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay, the state government has set up Deen Dayal Shodh Peeth at the museum built with the funds from Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme of former SP MP Mohan Singh.

The move has angered SP student leaders who have threatened to launch a protest.

The three-storey museum building was inaugurated in the memory of Mohan Singh by SP MPs Dimple Yadav and Jaya Prada in the presence of Kanak Lata Singh, daughter of SP veteran, in May 2016.

Purvanchal Sangrahalya, which still goes with the name of Mohan Bhavan, houses Deen Dayal Shodh Peeth at the first floor while a temporary office of Guru Goraknath Shodh Peeth has been set up at the second floor of the three-storey building which has been painted afresh in saffron colour.

In the name of Mohan Singh, a three-term MP from Deoria who died of cancer in 2013, just one painting of the veteran is placed.

Aman Yadav, sitting student union president of Samajwadi Chhatra Mahasabha( SCS) said, “The SCS leaders will lodge protest against setting up shodh peeth in the name of Deen Dayal Upadhyay at the museum built by SP veteran Mohan Singh. Instead of chair on RSS ideologue, it should be named on Samajwadi ideologue.”

DDU public relation officer (PRO) Dr Ajay Shukla said, “Such things should not be viewed with political angle. The fund given by Mohan Singh has been used in development of the university and Gorakhpur. Setting up of shodh peeth in the name of Deen Dayal Upadhyay or Guru Gorakhnath is the matter of pride for the state and the country.”

He said while a temporary office of Guru Gorakhnath has been set up at the building, the peeth will be transferred to new building being constructed at the site where old commerce department building at Maharana Pratap Shiksha Parishad campus is situated.

While details related to fund involved in setting up Deen Dayal Upadhyay Shodh Peeth could not be accessed , Rs 12 crore were sanctioned for the Guru Gorakhnath Shodh Peeth, the foundation stone of which was laid on November 30 by chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
