ARSON AFTER MISHAP

A police motorbike was set afire in Aligarh on Friday by angry locals who were protesting the death of a minor girl in a road mishap. The police team that went to pacify the agitators was also pelted with stones.

ALIGARH: Angered by the death of a girl in a road accident, a mob targeted vehicles and burnt a police motorcycle on Friday. The girl was on a two-wheeler being driven by her mother.

Police had to intervene but faced an angry mob which had gathered on Khair bypass after the girl’s death.

Reena Upadhaya, a teacher in a school, was going to school on her two-wheeler, on Friday morning. Her daughter Vanshika (6) and son Madhav, who studied in the same school, were on the two-wheeler.

To avoid water-logging on the road, Reena tried to manoeuvre the two-wheeler but the vehicle skidded and Vanshika fell on road and was crushed under the truck.

Reena and Madhav were injured in the incident but Vanshika died on spot, while the driver and cleaner of truck ran away. An angry mob targeted the truck and tried to burn it. Police constables on a motorcycle reached the spot but were pelted with stones forcing them to

flee, leaving the motorcycle behind, which was set ablaze by the mob. SP city Ashutosh Duwedi reached the spot and the girl’s body was sent for a postmortem examinatio­n.

The SP city said, “A student of second standard, Vanshika (6), was killed in an accident after being crushed by a moving truck. The angry mob targeted vehicles and burnt a police motorcycle.

“Those indulging in violence and arson will be identified and action will follow. The truck filled with rice has been shifted to the police station and a case has been registered against the truck driver on the complaint of mother”.
