UP minister, his mayor wife surrender before court, get bail
PRAYAGRAJ :Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Nand Gopal Gupta aka Nandi and his wife Abhilasha Gupta, the mayor of Prayagraj, surrendered before the special court (MP and MLA) here on Friday and were granted bail in connection with a case registered against them in 2012 alleging violation of the election model code of conduct.
Nand Gopal Gupta aka Nandi is the minister for stamp and court fees, registration and civil aviation.
Special judge Pawan Kumar Tiwari granted bail to the couple after they surrendered in connection with a non-bailable warrant issued against them in this case. After winning the mayoral poll in Prayagraj (then known as Allahabad) in 2012, Abhilasha Gupta and her husband allegedly took out a massive procession. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against them at Allahabad kotwali under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and others, alleging they violated the model code of conduct. Later, the police investigated the matter and filed a charge sheet against them.
A court, at one stage, took cognizance of the matter and issued summons to them. Later, the matter was transferred to the special court (MP and MLA) after it was set up.
The minister and the mayor failed to appear before the special court at the previous hearing, prompting the special judge to issue a non-bailable warrant against them. In pursuance of the NBW, the duo surrendered before the special court on Friday.
