Cow shelter sites: The buck stops with DMs, commissioners in Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has made district magistrates and divisional commissioners responsible for establishment and operation of cow shelter sites in the state.
Chief secretary Anup Chandra Pandey issued a circular in this regard, saying while the decision for setting up and operation of cow shelter sites would be taken by the district level committee headed by the district magistrate, the commissioner will monitor its proceedings.
The chief secretary directed the officials to carry out an awareness campaign for protection of cattle at temporary shelters, to make these places self-reliant and for adoption of abandoned cattle by the public. He added that departmental officers should give the names of organsations interested in rearing cattle to the district magistrate concerned so that necessary action can be taken.

arranged for the protection and promotion of cattle, along with the proper arrangement for maintenance of livestock, drinking water, light and fodder at cow shelter sites,” the circular said. Instructions were also issued, saying that those who left their cattle astray on the roads should be identified and appropriate action should be taken against them.
PENSION CAMPS
In a separate order, the chief secretary directed the officials to hold district-wise pension camps for the old age pensioners, widow pension and disabled person pension scheme from January 20. The officials were told to keep pension-related forms available at these camps so that the same could be filled in by the eligible beneficiaries on the spot. The venue of the camps should be advertised well in advance through newspapers, posters, and pamphlets, the order said. The verification of the filled-in forms should be done on the same day, the order said. In each condition, these forms should be made available to the district social welfare officer, district probation officer and district disabled officer within three days, it added.
